September Themes: Sustainability

September Themes: Sustainability

This month we’re focusing our blog on sustainability. Outlining what sustainability means for us as a team at Arctic Lynx and also what it means to each of us personally.

We all agree that sustainability begins when we individually decide to purchase something. Where is the product made? How is it made? And what is the company’s stance around sustainability? These are three things we all agree that we think about when purchasing something (no,not every single purchase we make, but most purchases).

We broke this blog down into a few different focus points to share how we, as a team, think about sustainability.

Focus 1: Clothing that we buy and/or already own:

  • Taking care of what we buy can help extend the life of our clothes which helps reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry.
  • Washing clothes less often can reduce wear and tear, AND save water and energy.
  • Air-drying clothes instead of using a dryer can help maintain their shape and prevent shrinking. It also saves on energy use.
  • Hanging or folding clothes correctly and storing them in a cool, dry place can help preserve their quality over time.
  • If a garment is no longer our style or is beyond repair we can consider selling or upcycling rather than disposing of it.

Focus 2: What we do with our clothing once we no longer need them/ want them: (before you consider disposing of your clothing)

  • Consider turning your old clothes into new creations through sewing, cutting, or embellishing.
  • Look for a local clothing swap event within our community. This allows us to exchange unwanted garments for “new” pieces without any additional cost. Looking to sell our items instead? Use @poshmark (or others) to resell your clothing or build a more sustainable closet. Local thrift stores are also a great avenue
  • Contribute gently used clothing to local charities or shelters. Your donations can find new owners and support those in need.
  • If your clothes are beyond repair or reuse, consider recycling them. Fabrics can often be transformed into insulation, cleaning cloths, or even new apparel. Take back programs such as @retoldrecycling make this a breeze.

Focus 3: What we do as a business to to be more sustainable:

  • We use recycled materials in our products wherever possible.
  • We ship using @ecoenclose packing which is partially recycled.
  • We produce small batches of classic clothing that doesn’t go out of style, so it can be worn again and again.
  • Arctic Lynx is a member of 1% For the Planet @1percentftp
